Philosophy
The Bridges program provides an environment that focuses on the distinct learning needs of students. The program is designed to assist students with mild to moderate learning disabilities and average to above average intelligence. Teachers in the program have training in research-driven educational theory and programs. Each student’s learning plan is based on a combination of clinical diagnoses, classroom assessments, and personal learning strengths. Teachers differentiate the method and rate of instruction to fit each child’s individual needs. Students receive math, reading, and writing instruction in small groups and join their grade-level peers for the rest of the day. Students in the Bridges program receive group occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and psychological services through our affiliation with Nova Southeastern University.
Admissions
The Bridges program accepts students of average to above average intelligence who experience learning difficulties with traditional instructional methods because of mild to moderate learning disabilities and language-based disorders. Admission to the program will be limited to students who can best achieve success in a program geared toward helping students develop academic skills, improve social interactions, and increase self-image and independence. Admissions will be denied to those students who, according to the judgment of the admissions committee, demonstrate cognitive limitations or behavioral difficulties that would prevent steady progress within the intervention program. The admissions committee will consider candidates using:
- Psychological evaluation conducted within the last two years
- Language testing and/or full-scale IQ
- Written recommendations from a psychologist
- Previous school records and recommendations
- A school visit and evaluation
- Parent interview
Also note that our school does not accept Step Up or other outside scholarships.
