Dates | days | times | fees |
June 27 - July 22, 2022 | Tuesday, Thursday | 11:00am - 12:00pm (via Zoom) | $500.00 |
Instructor: Andrew Stephens
Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. Much of traditional psychology has focused on maladaptive human behaviors, or “what’s wrong.” Positive psychology instead seeks to understand “what’s right” and the factors that promote a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life. This course is closely modeled on that of renowned psychology professor, Dr. Laurie Santos, whose 2018 course “Psychology and the Good Life” at Yale University became the most popular course in the university’s 300+ history.
This non-credit course will include a mandatory 10 hours of community service toward the USchool graduation requirement. Students will carefully select an appropriate venue and develop a small research project in conjunction with this service in which they study the impact of gratitude and altruism (helping others) on personal well-being.
The other major outcome of this course is for students to develop greater self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and a deeper understanding of what motivates them as individuals. These objectives will be tied closely to the college application process, as students learn how to integrate their personal strengths and motivations into a college essay. Each student will take a variety of assessments to identify their personal strengths and motivators and practice integrating these into a college, scholarship, or other application.
Key topics include: the meaning of happiness, coping with stress, gratitude, mindfulness, altruism (helping others), building community, growth mindsets, embracing vulnerability, and the importance of finding meaning and purpose as students enter college and adulthood.
This course will be highly collaborative and discussion-based and include faculty guest speakers from the NSU College of Psychology. In addition to the Canvas-based assignments and reflections, the class will meet over Zoom twice per week for discussion and activities.
